The Health Foundation (HF) is resourcing two projects which explore long-term challenges and vision for the NHS in Wales.
- HF, in partnership with the Public Policy Institute for Wales (PPIW) and Wales Public Services 2025, is modelling the gap between cost & demand pressures and resources over the next 15 years (2016 – 2030). The modelling will include a base scenario (making assumptions about future activity and resources) and explore the impact of five scenarios for narrowing it. One of the scenarios is the impact of improving efficiency. The other scenarios are based on change visions for four patient groups and are being developed through the second project (below)
- HF is funding the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care (WIHSC), University of South Wales to explore Prudent Healthcare and its possible impact. The project will examine the potential impact of Prudent Healthcare, and associated visions, on four key patient groups: mental health, long-term care, frailty & end of life, early years and prevention. As well as contributing to Project 1, this project will also include a case study and qualitative element.
The two projects are being taken forward on an integrated basis. Project 1 will be written up in an intermediate report due June 2016. A final report, including the fully-completed Project 2 will be published early 2017.
